Few sights rival the majesty of a male lion in his prime. In December 2024, I had the privilege of visiting Dinokeng Game Reserve and encountering a magnificent lion named Welgevonden. His story reflects the raw beauty and challenges of the African bush.

His journey to becoming a dominant force in this new territory was anything but simple. He underwent a soft release process, spending four weeks in a holding boma to acclimatize to his new environment. This period allowed him to adjust to the scents, sounds, and rhythms of his new home, setting the stage for his release in July 2024.
However, the release of Welgevonden into the wild marked the beginning of a dramatic chapter in Dinokeng’s lion dynamics. Marakele, a long-standing resident male lion who had been in the reserve since 2019, quickly became aware of the newcomer’s presence. A fight for dominance was inevitable. Age and experience were on Marakele’s side, but Welgevonden’s youth and strength tipped the balance in his favor. Sadly, Marakele was found dead on August 18, 2024, with signs pointing to conflict with Welgevonden as the cause. The scars Welgevonden bears on his face tell the story of that intense battle, a testament to the resilience required to survive in the wild.
During my visit to Dinokeng, I stayed at the beautiful Lookout Safari Lodge, which provided a perfect base for exploring the reserve. I was fortunate to join a game drive with Tsela Safaris, guided by the knowledgeable Karla. Her insights into wildlife behavior and conservation deepened my understanding of the challenges these magnificent creatures face. Seeing Welgevonden in person was a memorable experience.
Welgevonden’s story is more than just a tale of dominance; it is a reflection of the delicate balance within ecosystems and the resilience required to thrive. As he continues to adapt to his new territory, his presence will undoubtedly shape the future of Dinokeng’s lion population.
If you’re a wildlife enthusiast like me, Dinokeng Game Reserve is a must-visit destination. Located just an hour's drive from Johannesburg, it offers a perfect escape from the city. I highly recommend staying at Lookout Safari Lodge and embarking on a game drive with Tsela Safaris.
Discover the beauty of a wild life.
